In 1964, Bud Winter published The Rocket Sprint Start, based on Armin Hary of Germany winning the 100 meters at the 1960 Olympic Games.

If you’ve seen the vintage footage, you will agree on two facts (1) he was one of the fastest starters of all time, and (2) his pickup in the first 20 yards was amazing

What did he do differently?

A careful film analysis of Armin Hary’s form, taken from slow motion pictures, revealed seven ways in which his form differed from the rest of the sprinters. In each case they were all a definite contribution toward faster block clearance and faster pickup.

Bud Winter pioneered modern Track and Field, while creating the “Science of Sprinting” with his thorough, step by step detailed analysis and scientific studies.

This is the original book printed in 1964 plus an updated section comparing today's Jamaican sprinters (Asafa Powell & Usain Bolt) written by Jimson Lee, Coach of SpeedEndurance.com.

I was, as usual, looing for an edge to improve my sprinting technique
and my coaching skills.

There are a lot of options for the sprint start, and many experts, so to have
a comparison of two different styles in one book (at a reasonable price)was too good to resist.

There is a bit about different body types and strenght so you have to use your own experiences as to what
applies to whom. The final analysis is not totally clear but an experienced coach or
competitor will work it out.

In reality it is hard to make a change but there are a number of differences that can be applied
to improve on your current style. I particularly made use of the acceleration pickup at 20m which earned me
a silver in a recent World Titles competition (giving away 8yrs and one metre to the winner).

So, use it, or at least try it. Nothing to lose.

I HAVE SPENT MANY Days and hours trying To Find THE BEST WAY TO START AND The Rocket Sprint is the best book I have found ON the subject
When you know the technic of block start it was quite amusing to read the book.
There are thou some some details which everyone who claims to know the history of sprints should know. The value of the knowledge wins the price of the book. Include this in your Shelf of sports.
this is a very detailed guide. i've been coaching sprints for ten yrs and this gave me some great info.
Good "old school" information. Sprint training has progressed since Bud Winter's day, but some of his innovations have value today...the "Rocket Start" is one of them.
